Whirlwind Wisconsin Tour –

Friday trek up to San Francisco Airport, breakfast of hamburgers (don’t tell mom). Seamus and I had a blast and the travel was seamless, Julie picked us up at the Milwaukee airport and the Kloibers took real good care of us throughout our excursion. We have a lot to be thankful for from that family...

Saturday...

I tell you when it was Nebraska 17-Wisconsin 3, there was a pervasive cold and grimness throughout the stadium that hung heavy, almost as life sucking as the damp cold. But  56 straight points by the Badgers and the electrifying performance by  one Melvin Gordon III made it heat up real quick. Having the whole stadium on their feet for the fourth quarter jump around multiplied the fun and made  things like the 24 degree temperature, the Who concert-like trip to the restroom, and the after game traffic just  minor blips...Wisconsin 59-Nebraska 24.

Seamus, on vacation from grade six for a couple of days, was looking forward to snow and he got it - a couple of inches during the latter, celebratory stages of the game (nothing like the 50 that fell on Buffalo this week - just enough to say it snowed, but barely enough for him to make the two snowballs he ambushed me with later in the day). Obviously the unwritten snowball fight rule  never made it to San Luis Obispo. No head shots, buddy.

Sunday...

Lambeau is like a frozen Mecca to football and we were seasoned veterans, prepared for the cold. Seamus was in awe even on the walk into the stadium - thousands of tailgaters and then the steps up to the stadium, like stepping into a cathedral with the organ playing, the whole atmosphere complete with exploding fireworks and an Air Force flyover timed perfectly with the verses of the Star Spangled Banner was just the start. Then the Packers dominated, they could do nothing wrong. It seemed like the whole state of Wisconsin was in the stadium, friendlier and happier than a beer drinker on his third can. People were striking up conversations with Seamus and were happy to share their Packers with the California boy. 10 degree windchill be damned. The hot chocolate that took the entire third quarter to secure kept us alive and prepared us for our walk out of the stadium to the bus lot. I won't tell you who took a wrong turn and ended up taking us in the opposite direction.

Nothing could spoil the fun - not even the two guys who delayed the bus ride back because they wanted to extend their post game celebration at the Bar....

Last Fall Joe 'Crabber' Szalay and several friends raised $8000 for Jonesy running the Rock n Roll half marathon in Philadelphia. Well Joe stepped up again and this year raised another $7000.

Joe first met Jonesy as an under-grad at UAlbany where Jonesy coached him in the ways of rugby front row play.

And Joe would like everyone to know that "He don't like no mellow sh*t"

The third Jonesy Open went off without a hitch at Capital Hills in Albany on May 14, 2012. Over 250 golfers from all over the northeast came to pay tribute to Jonesy and pitched in to help defray some his medical expenses and other needs.

Two flights of players teed off, the first at 8:00AM followed by the second at 2:00PM. During lunch all were delighted when Jonesy arrived to share hugs, smiles and laughs with the competitors.

The evening went on with raffles, a silent auction and finally a live auction hosted by local newswoman Benita Zahn who did a great job of working the room to obtain top bids on every item. Thanks also to Benita for producing a wonderful segment for the WNYT nightly news.

All which took place was the result of the hard work of Paul Bulmer who organized the event. Mayor Jennings, Steve Vatter and Roger Martell should also be recognized for their contributions of time, energy and facilities. A note should be added to thank all the sponsors who donated money and goods that made the evening such a success.

See you next year…

Former University at Albany rugger Joe “Crabber”  Szalay along with his girlfriend Tiffany and close friends John, Christina and Amanda ran the Philadelphia Rock and Roll half marathon on September 18th, 2011 raising over $8000 in support of Jonesy.

As a fellow hooker, Joe had the privilege of working 1 on 1 with Jonesy during his time at Albany and took pride in learning from one of the best.

The second Jonesy Open went off without a hitch at Capital Hills in Albany on May 16, 2011, that is if you didn’t notice the weather. Over 200 golfers from all over the northeast came to pay tribute to Jonesy and pitched in to help defray some his medical expenses and other needs.

Two flights of players teed off, the first at 8:00AM followed by the second at 2:00PM. To say it was wet would perhaps be an understatement. Adding to that was the occasional clap of lightning and roll of thunder, mostly in the morning. But present was a hearty group of determined athletes and play went on. During lunch all were delighted when Michael Jones arrived to share hugs, smiles and laughs with the competitors.

Following the golf all were grateful to enter the two large heated tents that served as banquet hall. There, tales of valor past and present were exchanged intermixed with an appropriate number of adult beverages. A banquet followed with plenty of good food. More than one low digit former player was spotted revisiting the food stations.

The highlight of the evening was Lisa Jones’ speech about the family’s appreciation for everyone’s support. This was followed by Michael Jones address to the group which led to absolutely tumultuous applause from every single person present.

The evening went on with raffles, a silent auction and finally a live auction hosted by local sportscaster Roger Wyland who did a great job of working the room to obtain top bids on every item.

All which took place was the result of the hard work of Paul Bulmer who organized the event. Mayor Jennings, Steve Vatter and Roger Martell should also be recognized for their contributions of time, energy and facilities.
